The building currently known as “New York City Center” was constructed in 1923 and has been a haven for the arts since 1943—when Mayor La Guardia decided to renovate the space instead of knocking it down. The theater, crafted in the neo-Moorish style, is one of the most elegant performance spaces in the city. It’s a place worth visiting even if the stage remains empty. Fortunately for residents of the Midtown West no-fee luxury apartments at ARO, who find themselves just around the corner from the storied institution, the stage is always filled. For 75 years and counting, New York City Center has been hosting some of the most acclaimed dance and theater performances in the region. Here are some can’t-miss experiences this season.
Running from December 4th through January 5th, the famed Ailey dance company will hold new performances of favorites like Divining and Fandango, as well as company premieres of Camille A. Brown’s City of Rain and Aszure Barton’s BUSK. Moreover, this season will also feature three entirely new works: Donald Byrd’s Greenwood, Jamar Roberts’s Ode, and Darrell Grand Moultrie’s Ounce of Faith. The Ailey company has been well-known for over six decades—they bring something unique and vibrant to every performance. Tickets go fast, and this run ends soon, so act quickly.
Matthew Bourne’s signature version of Swan Lake premiered in London in 1995 and became a phenomenon, garnering a litany of awards and acclaim. Billed as “the world’s favorite ballet,” Swan Lake—specifically, Bourne’s version of Swan Lake—is adored by ballet enthusiasts as well as the adagio-averse. This production’s return to New York City is a big deal. It is running from January 30th through February 9th and will likely sell out rather quickly. So, be sure to jump on this opportunity to see a refined, modern production of a true classic.
Mack & Mabel premiered on Broadway in 1974 and has been performed in large and small theaters around the globe ever since. The Stewart and Herman musical tells the story of the tumultuous relationship of silent film stars Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand. It has had a big following for decades, but this is its first major NYC production since it was on Broadway. Part of City Center’s renowned Encores! series, Mack & Mabel runs from February 19th through the 23rd.
