Residents of the curvy new tower at 242 West 53rd known as ARO will find themselves overwhelmed by the bounty of entertainment venues nearby. Midtown West is close to the Theater District and the internationally acclaimed halls of Lincoln Center — not to mention a few lesser-known spots. Keep reading for a rundown of the best entertainment choices located just blocks from the stunning Midtown West rentals at ARO:
The Classics
Carnegie Hall is a symbol for excellent performance — and the storied venue is just four blocks northeast of ARO’s front doors. First opened in 1891, Carnegie Hall is home to the famous stage as well as a small museum dedicated to its own history. And, of course, the venue features a never-ending procession of the world’s finest musical performers. Highlights for the current season include a performance of Mozart piano concertos by legendary soloist Mitsuko Uchida and the Mahler Chamber Orchestrathe and a concert of contemporary West African music by musicians from Benin.
To the northwest, ARO residents will find Lincoln Center, where the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera all make their homes. Nestled within this temple to classical forms is the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which, in April, will celebrate 50 years of being every Manhattan cinephile’s favorite venue.
To the south, ballet fans will find the American Ballet Theatre, where modern compositions like Cathy Marston’s “Jane Eyre” share the stage with classics like Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “The Sleeping Beauty.” ABT is also home to an extensive range of educational opportunities for budding ballet dancers, including a pre-professional program for ages 12 to 17.
Fans of both legitimate theater and Broadway musicals will find themselves overwhelmed with evening and matinee options near their home base at ARO. The tower shares a block with the August Wilson Theatre — named after the famed playwright in 2005 — which is currently home to the production of “Mean Girls.” And, just across the street at the Neil Simon Theatre, residents can grab tickets for “The Cher Show.”
The Contemporaries
Three blocks west of ARO, residents will find Terminal 5, a hip venue where both up-and-coming and veteran musicians alike take the stage to entertain a packed house almost every night. Stars, including Snow Patrol and Big Boi, are scheduled to appear soon, and legendary riot grrrl band Bikini Kill will play a set in June.
If residents of ARO just need to relax and laugh a little, they need only walk three blocks south to Carolines on Broadway, one of the nation’s foremost stand-up comedy venues since 1982. This iconic stage has been home to performances by legends, including Dave Chappelle and Kathy Griffin, and the biggest names in comedy can always be found treading its boards.
And for residents of ARO, all of this world-class entertainment is just a few blocks away.
